Horse Riding

Horse riding is an important part of horse ownership, and an important part of enjoying horses, even if you don't own one.  Many horse lovers enjoy horse back riding, even if they don't have the time or money to own a horse. 

Riding a horse is easy to do, and can be taught in a matter of minutes.  If you are new to horse riding, you should take a short trip with a guide or a small group.  Also, you should make sure you are riding a horse that is used to being ridden, and one with a friendly temperament.  Horse back riding can be a bit frightening for some, because horses are such large animals.  If you are nervous, make sure you listen closely to your guide or instructor, and ask any questions that come to mind. 

In coastal areas, horse riding on the beach is a very popular activity.  In most areas that are used to tourists, there will be one or several companies which offer horse riding tours of the beach.  Usually there are larger groups of tourists, so this is not always the best choice if it is your first time riding a horse. 

Horse riding is a hobby for many people, and there are even amateur contests in many places.  A horse back riding aficionado can take a horse through an obstacle course and perhaps even win a prize. 

Horses used for commercial horse back riding are not generally purebreds, though there are exceptions.  These horses are often selected and bred for strength and temperament.  The horses used in commercial horse riding are very strong, as they will need to carry riders throughout the day.  More often than not, these horses are often very friendly, and used to being ridden by strangers. 

If you purchase a horse that was not previously a part of a commercial horse riding enterprise, it may be some time before you can ride it.  Many horses require a relationship with their riders.  As such, you may need to spend time offering snacks and meals, grooming, and talking with your new horse before you can do any horse back riding.  Be sure that both you and your horse are comfortable with each other before you attempt to trot, gallop, or jump over anything.  When riding a horse that is unfamiliar with being ridden frequently, it is best to begin slowly. 

Information on horse back riding is available everywhere you look.  You can find information about riding a horse in books at your local bookstore or library, on the internet, at your local feed store, or even at a nearby stable or neighbor's house, if they own horses. 

Horses are believed to have been domesticated animals for over five thousand years, and they have been ridden for much of that time.  Because of this, there is a large amount information on horse riding available.  Whether you're new to horse back riding or an old hand, horse riding information can be immensely helpful.  You really can never have too much information about riding a horse.
