Nokota Horses
The Nokota Horse is a horse with a unique and often tragic history.
The first taste that North America had of horses were those introduced
by European settlers, as no wild horses were indigenous to the
Americas. Over time, however, and especially with the move westward, a
large number of horses escaped from captivity and roamed wild,
eventually becoming self-sufficient and completely untamed.
One group of these horses became known as Nokota
Horses and roamed in the Badlands of North Dakota. However, for some
reason, local and national governments took objection to the existence
of wild Nokota Horses and hunted them throughout the 20th Century. Many
horses were killed during organized hunts or rounded up and
slaughtered. Some Nokota Horses found their way into a national park,
and were thus protected, while the rest of the Nokota Horses were
eventually killed off almost entirely.
In the late 20th Century, the park service expressed
a desire to remove the Nokota Horses and replace them with different
varieties of horses. Native American groups and Nokota Horse activists
have been fighting for the survival and historic recognition of the
wild Nokota Horse ever since.
Domesticated Nokota Horses for sale are widely
availably today. Many people appreciate the effect of the natural
breeding of the Nokota Horses in the difficult environment of the North
Dakota Badlands on their speed, intelligence, and agility. Nokota
Horses have become popular for racing events and cross country
sporting.
