Shetland Ponies for Sale: Little Ponies with a Big Horse Attitude
Shetland ponies are extremely hardy ponies, and their small size (from around 7hh to 11.2hh) makes them very popular for children to learn how to ride, or for in-hand showing. If you are looking for Shetland ponies for sale, there are some things to be aware of when it comes to this breed.
One appealing attribute of Shetland ponies is that they are very intelligent, and although they are small, they can be impatient. Often, Shetlands have a reputation for being bad tempered or for biting, but this is misplaced. This is usually brought about by the way they are treated. Ironically, this treatment usually involves them being spoiled because of their small size, rather than them being mistreated. For example, many people give them morsels of food, and then wonder why the pony associates fingers with food and starts to nip.
Don’t let this deter you from this wonderful breed, though – they may be little, but they have big personalities. If handled properly, they will be gentle and good-tempered.
Original Shetlands are stocky ponies with a short muscular neck, strong legs, and a short, broad back with a deep girth. Their heads are small with straight or slightly dished faces. If you are looking for Shetland ponies for sale, you may have noticed that they cover all the pony colors there are, including pinto. Be aware that the leopard spotting associated with the Appaloosa is not a color that registered Shetlands will have. The manes and tails of these ponies are thick, and their double winter coats are dense, which they shed during the warmer months to reveal a sleek, glossy coat.
